I got this error when I first started Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) on my personal computer and tried to create a new database. I was working on my personal laptop with Windows 10 installed, where I was the only user and thus an administrator with all the rights (or so I thought).

The new CREATE DATABASE function can be written as a Query or can be made through New Database window option: a right-click in the Object Explorer on the folder named ‘Databases’ – ‘New Database…’.

So upon inserting the Database name of the New Database window that popped out and clicking OK I was not expecting to get a strange error telling me Create failed for Database – CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database ‘master’.

Important note: I opened the SSMS from the start menu.
How can this be? I am the ONLY user on a computer, I am the administrator, how can I not have all of the permissions in all of the applications?
I you are the only user of a computer and an administrator the most easiest and first solution to try if you are running SSMS from the start menu is to make sure that you run the SSMS as an administrator. So upon first opening SSMS instead of just double-clicking take the time to use the Run as administrator option hidden under the right-click.

This super simple solution actually was the answer to my error.
**In order to always run the app as an administrator when choosing it from the Start menu just go to the folder with the Start menu shortcut (Right-click ‘Open file location’ on the shorcut from the Start menu) and tick the “Run as administrator” box under the Advanced settings:
